If He did than he could not allow the Nazis to slaughter His innocent people, if God was there He could not bear the mayhem in those horrifying concentration camps and if God was there He was not treating the people like the Nazis did. Eric Stoltz, the author of the article about Proposition 22, a law project that banned recognition of the same sex marriages in California, writes: I could, for example, fly to Las Vegas tonight, wed a prostitute in a drunken stupor, and return to Los Angeles tomorrow morning to have my marriage fully recognized by the law and society. Fifty women can vie on national television to marry a man they've never met for his money, and that union would be recognized by the state. Any man can marry a woman for her looks in a cynical but legally sanctioned form of concubinage, and that union would enjoy all the rights and privileges of marriage. But if two people of the same sex want to establish rights of inheritance or become legally empowered to make health-care decisions for one another, we are now told that the entire structure of Western civilization will come crashing down. (Commonweal, 2000).2 And, in fact, the situation indeed looks like it. The persuasion that marriage should be a union, which only the representatives of two different genders can enter, is a social norm that was established thousands of years ago, when people created families as they needed to unite in order to survive, and bring their children up. The social roles in the primitive society were very well-defined - men had to bring food, and women were to raise kids and maintain fire, thus such a union was perfectly justified (Sullivan, 2004). 3 As thousands of years passed after people left the caves, the distribution of social roles has changed. Today both men and women can be the breadwinners in the family, the same as both members of the family can stay home to care for the kids. The necessity in the different-gender unity nowadays is much weaker than it had been when this social norm was first formed.

Performance Enhancing Drugs For many years sports have played huge roles in human’s everyday lives. From entertainment, political, financial and to actually competing in them. The task for the sportsmen or women, especially in the top rank, is to beat the other competitors and get a good result from it. Here there is a high amount of pressure on many athletes coming from the media, coaches, themselves etc. They have the wanting to do well and achieve their goals and aims so much that some of the athletes turn to performance enhancing drugs. Obviously training for competition is the main thing to do but using drugs is another helper to succeeding. So, to their way of thinking, doping does not seem like cheating it just seems like something that has to be done for success. Using chemicals in the hopes of improving athletic performance is nothing new. If you were an athlete in the Greek Olympic days, your coach might have suggested you try different mushrooms to gain a competitive advantage. Doping, however, in the sense used today, really came onto the scene in the 19th century. The first drugs to be used were heroine and morphine. Heroine was mainly found in horse-racing circles, while morphine was very much in fashion in boxing and so-called endurance sports. It was suspected of having caused the death of Arthur Lindon, a Welsh racing cyclist who died a few months after the Bordeaux-Paris race of 1896, thereby becoming the first ever recorded victim of doping. Things really got out of hand at the beginning of the 20th century, with strychnine and ephedrine making their appearance, not to mention steroids. Over the last few years, doping has taken a new, dangerous turn. Growth hormones drugs have appeared, as well as doping i... ...ity without drugs. If the athlete, coach or medical adviser resorts to using drugs to assist performance, they are also cheating themselves. Also the bad name that it gives to the sport that the athlete cheats at and very importantly the way that young children look up to there favourite athletes and if he/she hears about them taking drugs they may want to try them as well.

The merchant of venice: Tragedy or Comedy

William Shakespeare, widely regarded as the world's greatest playwright, has revolutionized the world of English literature with his plays. Some of these plays are clear-cut comedies and tragedies, while others are more ambiguous. The Merchant of Venice is a play that falls under the latter type, and it has been hotly contested whether this literary work should be classified a comedy or a tragedy. However, since the majority of the characters received a happy ending, the abundance of comic relief scenes and characters, and lightheartedness of the plot relative to otherShakespearean works leads me to conclude that The Merchant of Venice is indeed a comedy. One of the characteristics of a comedy is that it usually contains a happy resolution of conflict, and this was definitely reflected in the conclusion of The Merchant of Venice. â€Å"Happy endings† usually pertain to the protagonists or the main characters surviving or outlasting misfortune. Antonio being spared and cleared of any debt he owed Shylock by the Venetian courts (Act ‘V, scene i) is a prime example of the protagonist receiving satisfactory closure.In the drama building up to the court scene, Antonio's best friend, Bassanio, had cut a deal with the devil as he borrowed money from the shrewd Shylock, with the stipulation that repayment would either be in ducats or a pound of Antonio's flesh (Act l, scene When Antonio's business enterprise came crashing down abruptly, he had no means by which to repay Shylock, thus setting up the major conflict of The Merchant of Venice. Antonio's ending is undoubtedly a happy one for his character, since his life was spared and he was cleared of any charges.Another example of a character with a favorable conclusion is Portia. Recently, her father had been pushing her toward marriage, and because of her many biases, she found it near impossible to find a suitable suitor (Act II, scene i). At the end of the play, she does, in fact, end up with the only ma n that's ever caught her eye, Bassanio. These happy endings for primary characters are typical of Shakespearean comedies. The Merchant of Venice is abounding with other typical Shakespearean comedy techniques like comic relief; humor that manifests itself in both situations nd characters.The overall hilarity of the play is an ample reason to classify it as a comedy rather than a tragedy. Shakespeare inserts comic relief scenes at opportune times in this play to relieve tension, and Jessica and Launcelot's banter in Act Ill, scene v is an excellent example of this. In the preceding scenes, Shylock has Just hauled Antonio off to Jail while Portia and Nerissa attempted to devise a scheme to rescue their future husbands' friend – two very action-packed and intense developments in the story. Comic relief is a literary device that extends to characters as well. The interactions moments of the play (Act II, scene it), where Old Gobbo fails to recognize Launcelot as his son because of his ailing senses. Shakespeare utilized plenty of Jokes that would have appealed to the audiences of his time here to rouse laughter.At its very root, a comedy is a drama with a humorous or satirical tone, and The Merchant of Venice's comic relief scenes and characters provide the audience with this humorous air. When compared to many of Shakespeare's other dramatic works, The Merchant of Venice's storyline is much more lighthearted and tame. This play turned out more like an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 than something as grave and solemn as Macbeth or Othello. There are many attributes which corroborate this theory. For starters, cross dressing is used as a motif in The Merchant of Venic e.When placed longside a different play like Macbeth, where the motifs are critical matters like bad omens, borrowed robes, and fapdes, The Merchant of Venice does seem less serious. Also, the magnitude of its plot is definitely much less significant than a lot of Shakespeare's other plays. The Merchant of Venice is primarily concerned with the interactions of Italian suitors and heiresses – much like the angsty teen dramas of today. On the other hand, plays like Julius Caesar revolve around recanting the epic downfalls of tyrannical politicians.Though not to undermine its literary significance, I m convinced that The Merchant of Venice is a less serious, more whimsical play than some of Shakespeare's other works – a feel that comedies are supposed to have. Plays can be like characters in that their real nature can be very ambiguous. The Merchant of Venice is heralded as a fine example of a comedy by some, while asserted to be a tragedy by others. This play can be clea rly categorized as a comedy, because the majority of the characters received favorable conclusions, comic relief is in abundance, and the lighthearted, quirky nature of the plot.

By: Alexander Pope Alexander Pope’s â€Å"Sound and Sense† explains true poetry stems from the use of both meter and diction to reinforce the meaning and theme of the poem. Pope demonstrates his point of view by meticulously creating loud and soft phonetics to echo the sense of the poem and evoke realistic imagery. Alexander Pope explains in â€Å"Sound and Sense† that â€Å"The sound must seen an echo to the sense†, this advice is reflected in lines 9-12. When Ajax strives some rocks vast weight to throw† describes a sense of Ajax’s powerful and athletic composition. The 10 syllable line displays the strength in iambic pentameter which reflects Ajax’s balanced poise. The hard vowel sounds in the line â€Å"Ajax†, â€Å"weight†, â€Å"strives† and â€Å"throw† alludes to vigor and force. These words characterize the bruteness of Ajax, a Greek warrior, who is glamorized for his powerful physique. Pope’s use of sound to create sense gives evidence of his advice.Pope’s utilization of rough phonetics is juxapostioned against his use of soft sounds to describe Camilla. Camilla, a legendary queen renowned for her swiftness of feet, is reflected through the implementation of soft sounds and limited punctuation in these lines â€Å"when swift Camilla scours the plain, Flies o’er the unbending corn, and skims the main. † Words such as â€Å"swift† and â€Å"skim† evoke smooth, light and quick movements. Therefore, the reader can observe that Pope follows his advice. Alexander Pope’s â€Å"Sound and Sense† is written with intricate detail challenging his fellow colleagues to expand their poetic techniques. Each word and punctuation is meant to evoke an emotional sense i nto the reader, creating deeper symbolism in the poem. Sound is essential in the interpretation of theme in the poem. Neil Gaimans Advice for LivingCreatively I have no idea who the speakers were at my own graduation ceremonies. Luckily, the kids who just graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia will not have that problem, as their commencement guest was author Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, American Gods, Coraline).   Although Gaiman never graduated from any college himself,   he is one of the most popular and prolific of modern authors. Here is some of the advice he gave to the Class of 2012: 1. Want to write? Write. Its that simple. I learned to write by writing. I tended to do anything as long as it felt like an adventure, and to stop when it felt like work - which meant that life did not feel like work. 2.   Make good art. Sometimes life is hard. Things go wrong - and in life, and in love, and in business, and in friendship, and in health, and in all the other ways in which life can go wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do:  Make good art.  I’m serious. Husband runs off with a politician? Make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by a mutated boa constrictor? Make good art. IRS on your trail? Make good art. Cat exploded? Make good art. Someone on the internet thinks what you’re doing is stupid, or evil, or it’s all been done before? Make good art. 3. Learn first by copying those you love.   Henry Miller said, And your way, is it really  your  way? [†¦] What, moreover, can you call your own? The house you live in, the food you swallow, the clothes you wear - you neither built the house nor raised the food nor made the clothes. Solicitar visa de turista a EE.UU. desde otro paà ­s Si se desea  solicitar una visa de turista (paseo o placer) para los Estados Unidos en un paà ­s que no es el de residencia habitual se deben seguir una serie de reglas porque no siempre es posible. Esta  solicitud se conoce en inglà ©s como peticià ³n de Third Country Nationals o TCNs, por sus siglas en inglà ©s.   Cundo no se puede solicitar visa de turista en Mà ©xico, Canad o Bahamas Puede ocurrir que una persona extranjera se encuentre de visita en Mà ©xico, Canad o Bahamas y, debido a su proximidad, desee ingresar tambià ©n a EE.UU. y, si no tiene visa de turista, considere en pedirla en ese momento. Segà ºn las normas actuales, en los siguientes dos casos no pueden solicitar visa de turista para Estados Unidos en Mà ©xico, Canad o Bahamas las personas que no son  ciudadanas o residentes habituales de esos distritos cuando: En primer lugar, los solicitantes hubieran estado ilegalmente en algà ºn momento en los Estados Unidos. El caso ms frecuente es el de los extranjeros que no salieron dentro del plazo permitido provocando lo que se conoce en inglà ©s como overstay de la visa. Estas personas obligatoriamente deben solicitar la nueva visa en un consulado de los Estados Unidos en el paà ­s del que son nacionales o en el que residen habitualmente. En segundo lugar, todos los ciudadanos de los paà ­ses que Estados Unidos clasifica oficialmente como patrocinadores de terrorismo. En la actualidad, los paà ­ses incluidos en dicha lista son Corea del Norte, Irn, Sudn y Siria. Adems, debe tenerse en cuenta que en los casos en los que sà ­ se puede solicitar la visa es habitual que los consulados estadounidenses que se encuentran ubicados en las ciudades fronterizas de Mà ©xico con Estados Unidos y de Canad con EE.UU. no procesen, como regla general, las visas de turista para extranjeros que no son ni ciudadanos mexicanos ni residentes en ese paà ­s. Asimismo, dichos consulados ubicados a lo largo de la frontera tampoco tramitan habitualmente ninguna visa E si el solicitante no reside habitualmente en esa rea.  Hay diversos tipos de visas E, desde inmigrantes o las no inmigrantes de inversià ³n.   En los dems casos, se puede solicitar una visa de turista para Estados Unidos en cualquier embajada o consulado. En el caso de haber estado previamente como ilegal en Estados Unidos o de haber violado las condiciones de la visa, asegurarse primero de que es posible hacerlo en el consulado de eleccià ³n. Sin embargo,el que pueda solicitarse la visa en otro consulado no quiere decir que sea recomendable. Hay que evitar dar la impresià ³n de que se est buscando y comparando para decidirse por el consulado que podrà ­a juzgarse como ms permisivo a la hora de aprobar una visa. Esta prctica es lo que se conoce en inglà ©s con el nombre de consulate shopping. Adems, por motivos prcticos puede ser ms difà ­cil en estos casos de solicitudes presentadas fuera del paà ­s de residencia habitual acreditar lazos familiares y econà ³micos fuertes en el paà ­s en el que se reside, que es un requisito fundamental para sacar la visa de turista. Por à ºltimo, cabe destacar que aunque sà ­ que es cierto que los porcentajes de aprobacià ³n de la visa son diferentes por paà ­ses, no menos cierto es que la ley migratoria es la misma y se aplica por igual en todos los consulados de EE.UU.
